Is Credit Repair Legal?
Yes, credit repair is 100% legal. The government realized that many
consumers were at a financial disadvantage because of errors that
appeared on their reports. Congress enacted the Fair Credit Reporting
Act (FCRA) in 1970.* In 1996, amendments to FCRA expanded the
responsibilities of data furnishers, prohibiting them from knowingly
providing inaccurate consumer information to a (CRA) Credit Reporting
Agency in certain circumstances.**
The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) was passed in
2004 to further protect our rights and provide public awareness on
credit reporting. Prior to this it was very difficult for someone to
access his or her credit information. Thanks to the "Fact Act"
we are now able to access one free credit report per year from
AnnualCreditReport.com.
